What is a 'seroma'?
Seroma is the collection of serous fluid within a dead space created by either surgery or following trauma to a site. The collecting fluid is usually clear and does not contain blood or pus cells. It usually does not contain infective organisms, but has the potential to get infected secondarily.
What are the cause and how does the seroma occurs?
The usual scenario before the occurrence of this condition is, the patient undergoing a surgery to remove a relatively large mass or receiving an implant in to their body. Common instance of developing such seromas is soon after mastectomy. The removal of the breast tissue will result in a dead space as well as damaged small blood vessels. The condition will give rise to an inflammatory response which will increase the blood vessel permeability as well. This increase permeability and damage to the small blood vessels will lead to fluid accumulation which is mostly the serum of the blood. (Read more)
